Port Aransas Fishing

You came to Port Aransas for Texas warmth, fun, sand, and water at the beach along the Gulf of Mexico. Anglers will want to make sure they pack in plenty of fishing, too, in the “Fishing Capital of Texas.” In addition to fishing, there is other beach and water fun to be had as well. Pack up all your fishing gear, stock the cooler with snacks and drinks, and head out for a day on the water to enjoy Port Aransas fishing. You may even pack your swim suit for a refreshing dip or water sport afterward. Make sure to obtain the proper Texas fishing license before casting a line.

Bay & Shallow Water

The waterways around Mustang Island and Port Aransas are the perfect place for bay and shallow water fishing. Pack your gear and head to the calmer waters of the area for the serene fishing experience you crave. You can expect to hook redfish, flounder, black drum, snapper, and trout to bring home for lunch or dinner.

Deep Sea

Charter a fishing tour or rent an appropriate vessel and brave the deeper waters of the Gulf on your own. The adrenaline and excitement of a deep sea excursion, no matter who is taking the helm, on the Gulf is one a dedicated angler won’t want to miss on a trip to Port Aransas. Cast a line in hopes of snagging bigger catch that swim in the deeper water, including kingfish, sailfish, marlin, tuna, and much more.

Jetties

Fish Pass Jetty is a little further south down the island from Horace Caldwell Pier. If you started your fishing journey at the pier, the short walk is easy to handle. The jetty spans a Mustang Island State Park. Enjoy surf fishing or cast a line in the bay. The South Jetty is another gem where nearshore species come close to shore and inshore species enjoy the calmer water.

Horace Caldwell Pier

The Horace Caldwell Pier is just a 10-minute drive from your Sandcastle Resort Condos vacation rental – and it’s also a great place to cast a line. You can fish 24/7, but there are pier attendants available during business hours (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) to help with all your needs. Bait, tackle, and equipment are available for sale in the Keepers at the pier shop, just in case you need extra. Admission is $3/person plus $4/pole and is cash-only with correct change appreciated. Kids under six-years-old are free and discounts are available for military and seniors aged 65 and older.

Beach Time

The highlight of your Port Aransas fishing journey is, of course, the fishing. Don’t forget Port Aransas is full of other activities to keep you busy on the waterfront. Trade your fishing gear for beach gear and head out for a relaxing day on the sand or a different kind of play time in the water. Spread out your blanket and plant your beach umbrella to lounge on the sand with a book or step out into the sun for some sunbathing. Swim in the waves of the Gulf or enjoy your daily exercise on the beach.

Port Aransas Museum & Farley’s Historic Boat Shop

Learn more about Port Aransas and what shaped the town into what it is today. Much of the fishing trade was originally based around tarpon. The museum boasts a number of temporary and permanent exhibits, with rotating featured exhibits so no two visits are the same. The museum is located in a 1900s “kit house” at 400 N. Alister and is open Thursday-Saturday from 1-5 p.m., with tours given by local volunteers. Admission is free, and donations are accepted. Farley Boat Works, where some of the first tarpon fishing boats produced in Port Aransas were made, is the premier boat builder in Port Aransas, specializing in tarpon fishing boats. The “living exhibit” can be visited at 716 W. Avenue C on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 9 a.m.-noon. It is closed Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday.
