Shorty’s Place
Shorty’s has been a Port A staple and hot spot since 1946, so they know how to party. Dubbed “the island’s oldest & friendliest,” it’s one of the best places for live music, with a packed schedule of local bands that play everything from blues and soul music to country and classic rock. Chow down on traditional bar and pub fare and wash it down with a selection from their extensive drink menu. They’re located at 101 Beach Street in Port A. Glowing Kayak Tour
Take a tour by kayak without having to get up early! You and your guys can enjoy the calm waters of the evening on a unique nighttime tour of the area. Board a clear boat that features special underwater LED lights. Change the pattern and color of the lights to your preference, then set sail with a knowledgeable guide who will point out landmarks, fill you in on Port A history, and more. Look down through the bottom of your vessel and see the activity of the world below your boat.
Jet Skis
For some adrenaline-pumping fun with friends, rent a jet ski and slice through the waters of the Gulf around Port A at top speed. Choose from several companies that rent jet skis for fast-paced good time on water. You may need to obtain a Texas boating certificate before piloting a craft, whether that’s on your own or during a group tour – some tour companies can help you with that before the adventure.
Undersea Adventures
Tap one of the many companies that help you take your Port A water adventure below the waves. Book a snorkeling or SCUBA diving tour with your buddies and plunge under the water to see a side of Port A and the Gulf of Mexico you can’t see up close from inside a tour boat. Many companies offer SCUBA certification before the trip, and if you want to rent gear to dive later, you’ll need to be certified.
Surf Camp
There is plenty of water adventure to be had along the shores of Port A with your guys. Whether you’re a group of seasoned beach bums who just hasn’t tried it yet, or mainlanders who don’t get to the beach often, grab your buddies and a surfboard for some lessons. Professional instructors teach you everything you need to know to catch your own waves, either on a regular surfboard or on a windsurfing adventure – or both!
Fishing
You and your friends can cast a lazy line from Horace Caldwell Fishing Pier, or head down to Fisherman’s Wharf where you can charter a fishing boat that will take you to the best spots in Port A. Many companies offer half-day six-hour charters, as well as full days or multiple days afloat. Ask about extra thrills like night fishing, deep sea fishing, or even shark fishing. Reminder: make sure everyone in the group scores the appropriate Texas fishing license before heading out.
