You came to Port A for Texas warmth, fun, and the sand and water at the beach along the Gulf of Mexico – and maybe to get away from the drastically cooling temperatures of home this fall. There is plenty to do and see both inside and out during a fall in Texas escape to Port A, so you can fill your itinerary as full as you like, with plenty of added relaxation around your rental provided by Sandcastle Condos.
Day 1: Beaches
While the weather of Port A is cooling from scorching summer heat, it’s still plenty warm to spend as much time as you please at the beach. Pack up your beach gear and head out for a day on the sand or play time in the water. Spread out your blanket and plant your beach umbrella to lounge on the sand with a book or step out into the sun and soak up the less-intense rays. Swim in the waves of the Gulf, help the kids build sandcastles, or enjoy your daily exercise on the beach.
Day 2: Fishing
The easy, year-round activity is one visitors of all ages and skill levels can enjoy. Charter a tour or rent some gear and strike out on your own. Check out the bays and shallow waters, piers, and jetties, or ask about the best places to see what’s biting in the Fishing Capital of Texas. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush with your catch of the day, head out on a deep sea trip in search of kingfish, marlin, tuna, and others who lurk in the deeper waters of the Gulf.
Day 3: Surf Lessons
With the waters of the Gulf only just beginning to cool, water sports will definitely be on your mind during your island getaway. Get the adrenaline pumping while you learn a new skill during your fall respite to Port A and try windsurfing, traditional surfing, or both along the Port A coast. You’ll learn from professional instructors during private lessons that will give you the skills you need to rent your own board and surf the waves on your own!
Day 4: Underwater Adventures
Book a snorkeling or SCUBA diving tour during your fall retreat and plunge under the water to see a side of Port A and the Gulf of Mexico you can’t see up close from inside a tour boat. Many companies offer SCUBA certification before the trip, and if you want to rent gear to dive later, you’ll need to be certified before striking out on your own.
Day 5: University of Texas Marine Science Institute
The University of Texas at Austin houses its Marine Science Institute on the shores of Port A. Its goal is to educate the public on marine science, as well as how to take better care of the marine environment of Port A and the surrounding area. The institute offers public programs, lectures, and more, and the Patton Marine Science Education Center is opening soon.
Day 6: Glowing Kayak Tour
Enjoy a different kind of nighttime-only kayak tour this fall when you board a clear kayak lit up by special underwater LED lights! The clear boat allows you to see not only the multiple colors of LED light settings you can choose, but the underwater world beneath you as well. Set the lights to your unique color and style pattern. Paddle along as your tour guide points out Port A landmarks and provides a wealth of knowledge and history about the area on the 1.5-hour nighttime cruise under the stars.
Day 7: Port Aransas Museum & Farley’s Historic Boat Shop
Learn more about Port A and what shaped the town into what it is today. The museum boasts a number of temporary and permanent exhibits, with rotating featured exhibits, meaning no two visits are the same. The museum is located in a 1900s “kit house” at 400 N. Alister and is open Thursday-Saturday from 1-5 p.m., with tours given by local volunteers. Admission is free, and donations are accepted. Farley Boat Works is the premier boat builder in Port A, specializing in tarpon fishing boats. The “living exhibit” can be visited at 716 W. Avenue C on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 9 a.m.-noon. It is closed on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday.
